June meeting report – Constance Cox competition shortlist workshop

We published our long list of twelve plays on the website a couple of months ago.

June’s meeting featured the Constance Cox competition First Three Pages live event. Those first few pages of any script are a vital hook to the reader. Do they capture attention, keep interest and spark the desire to read on? At Sunday’s meeting we presented the First Three Pages from the twelve long listed plays for discussion and feedback and decided the final shortlist.

The shortlisted plays

Cash
Distortion
Rock and Chips
Storm in a League Cup
The Other Apprentice
The Teaswell Incident
Will

The finalist committee are currently reading the entries.

We’ll announce the winners at the July 2nd meeting.

The organisers reserve the right to withdraw or add further prizes at their discretion.

Other meeting news

We also looked back on the 2017 Brighton Festival Fringe. Members Simon Moorhead, Thomas Everchild and Philippa Hammond discussed the practicalities of producing, writing, directing and performing in a new play.

Simon Jenner saw and reviewed over a hundred productions over the month, and the meeting discussed some of the productions we’d seen.

Sussex Playwrights Reviews

We began a new venture – reviewing shows under the Sussex Playwrights Reviews banner. We started during the Fringe, and will continue with more reviews of new theatre, audio and film drama in future. If you’re presenting a show in the region, especially new writing, and would like it reviewed, please do let us know.
